  • Palringo Vocal IM

Looking for a light and simple instant messenger application for my Pocket PC and Windows Mobile, a friend recommended me Palringo application that most likely looks like what I was looking for. Palringo is a vocal instant messenger designed for Windows PC, Windows Mobile and Symbian and provides all the common services such as MSN (Live), Google Talk (Jabber), Yahoo!, AIM and ICQ in a very simple and light form. You need to register on their site for an account and give it to the instant messenger...
  • My New Pocket PC: HTC P4350

Over the past 3.5 years, I've been using a Qtek 2020 Pocket PC to manage my business life! That PPCPE had Windows Mobile 2003 installed by default but I upgraded its ROM image to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. I was a member of first groups of the wave of people who bought Windows Mobile devices here (Symbian is the most popular OS locally!). For almost two years, it was an excellent device for me but after new releases of Windows Mobile and breaking some parts of its LCD, I didn't attend...
  • Web Client Software Factory Released

Via Brad Abrams (via Microsoft.com ): Web development in the enterprise just got significantly easier! Our Patterns and Practices group just released their Web Client Software Factory which address many of the most common areas I hear corporate web developers talk about. I've learned quite a bit from the other factories released by the P&P team; this one looks to be a slam dunk for anyone developing web applications. Seeing as I'm heading back to the corporate IT realm (well kinda sorta...details...
  • Ajax.Equals(Threading For Web Apps)

I recently heard a good analogy for what Ajax means for web applications: Ajax is to web applications what multithreading is for Windows based apps. By "heard" I mean it's something I came up with recently while trying to explain exactly what Ajax is to a non-programming friend of mine (understanding threading is simple enough even for folks who don't write applications). Compare that to "Ajax fires off a request to a web server without the need for a full server postback to process server side data...
  • C# Coalesce Operator -- Underlying Type Not Tested For Null?

I recently came across an irk with the new C# coalesce operator (??) which, if done by design, doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. I couldn't find any documentation either confirming or denying that this is by design...if it's by design I'm sure there is a good reason for doing so, if not then this behavior Consider the following pseudo-code: MyClass myClass = new MyClass(); // do some stuff with myClass, then time to do some cleanup such as persisting a string property SettingsClass...
  • Requesting Some Help On Crashdumps

My machine finally got around to crashing again and I was able to snag a mini-dump...the problem is that I'm limited in my ability to interpret them other than to pick out which process caused the crash. I have 3 total: The first one was crashed by an old USB hub that apparently doesn't play nice with XP x64. The second was triggered by steam.exe while playing one of their games, and The third was caused by devenv.exe (Visual Studio) during a build process. So maybe it's not my sound card drivers...
  • Microsoft Vista/Office/Exchange Launch In Charlotte

I will be attending the local Charlotte NC launch of Vista/Office/Exchange on the 18th of January...if anyone else in the Charlotte area will be attending, drop me a line and we'll try to meet up, or meet for lunch somewhere uptown beforehand, or snacks afterwards, or whatever. • Waiting For The Crash

I'm still experiencing some random hangs on my rebuilt machine every couple of hours or so and have finally decided to get off my lazy rear end and track down why it's happening. I'm 90% sure it's related to my sound card driver, but of course cannot be positive. So I've configured my machine to generate crash dumps, have downloaded all of the necessary diagnostic tools (WinDbg, symbol files, etc) for looking at said crash dumps... And the damn machine hasn't crashed in 24 hours. This is the first...
  • Upgraded To Windows XP x64 Edition

I haven't formatted my main workstation in over 2 years...things have been slowing down quite a bit, plus I've been experiencing random lockups so I decided it was time to migrate from a 32 bit OS over to a 64 bit one. The first thing I learned is that stop error codes are twice as long (16 characters vs 8)...the initial nForce drivers I loaded weren't very well liked. Of course that was easily ironed out and everything is humming along quite nicely (and fast as well...even after reloading all my...
  • My Last Holdout Switches To Community Server

Hell hath frozen over...Bob has moved from subText over to Community Server (more info on his site here and here ) with some gracious help from BlogML . My job as a CS zealot here in NC is now done; most of the local bloggers I know are now on the CS platform. What's funny is that they have all run into the same gotchas for the most part, most notably how arcane it is to enable anonymous comments...seems like just yesterday I was yelling about the same problems. What's cool is that he found most...
  • AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core Processor Upgrade -- Thank You Santa!

I've been in the market for a dual core processor for a while now, but have been waiting for some of the prices to fall as well as just letting the dust settle over at AMD to see what panned out for their socket 939 architecture. Santa was kind enough to bring me an AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core this year for Christmas (each core running at 2.4ghz). The upgrade itself was a little bumpy; initially my motherboard didn't recognize the processor as anything other than a generic AMD dual core CPU...turned...
  • JetBrains Omea Pro Now Free

I can't find a link on the Jetbrains site with this announcement...I came across it in my feeds earlier this week; Omea Pro from Jetbrains is now free . I've been using Omea Reader for quite a while now as my main NNTP/RSS aggregator and absolutely swear by it, even if it is a bit resource heavy. Omea Pro builds on the capabilities of Omea Reader with these additional features ...mainly MS Outlook integration and search capabilities. I'll stick with Reader for now, but will definitely have a look...
  • RSS Bandit Comment Watcher

Via Haacked : Participating in the comments section of particularly interesting blog posts is a lot of fun and helps build community. But one of the annoyances in doing so is that there’s really no good way to keep track of comments. Unlike new posts in someone’s RSS Feed, most aggregators won’t tell you when there is a new comment. Sure, there is coComment , but since I like to post comments using my RSS Aggregator via the CommentAPI , coComment isn’t such a help there. But help is on the way. Dare...
  • Add A Nice Touch To Your Site -- Snap Preview

A couple of folks in the Community Server have posted about a nifty offering from the folks over at Snap.com : Snap Preview Everywhere . It's a little gimmicky, but adds a nice touch to existing websites via just a couple of lines of javascript added to your header. I only have 2 complaints (if you can even call them that): I wish there was an option to specify the dimensions of the snap preview window (it's tiny on my 1600x1200 monitor), and an option to open links to external sites in a new window...
  • XML Notepad 2007 Released

Just a short blurb before stuffing myself tomorrow with turkey; it appears that Microsoft has released XML Notepad 2007 . The previous version was an invaluable tool for me when it comes to working with XML documents, and no doubt this version will be even better. To everyone here in The States, enjoy your Thanksgiving!
