  • Update Visual Studio 2005 Add-ins for Visual Studio 2008

A blog post by Andreas Erben about updating CopySourceAsHtml add-in for Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 (which was a part of Scott Hanselman's Ultimate Developer Tools 2007 ) bit me to write this point and give a more general description about updating your Visual Studio 2005 add-ins for Visual Studio 2008. I know working on this stuff for the book makes me old!! In general, you can upgrade a Visual Studio 2005 add-in for Visual Studio 2008 by copying its DLL file, add-in file and configuration file...
  • Serialized data as typed class properties

I enjoyed the CS Bit from yesterday's Byte capturing a rant about Community Server's use of serialized data in key/value fields from a developer who was frustrated migrating the data in SQL to another application (as opposed to using the CS API to do it.) This isn't about that, but it made me think about how life has been sweet since I've been accessing extended data properties in my custom CS objects as typed class properties. Nothing new here, as its standard issue in Community...
  • Deflowered twice on one day at nrw07

Last Friday the nrw07 took place in Wuppertal, the biggest community conference in North Rhine-Westphalia. About 100 attendees including the 22 speakers! The Diebels brewery contributes a couple of beer crates, and Subway served lots of sandwiches for lunch. And I was deflowered twice on that day. First, it was my very first talk! I gave a Community Server presentation a couple of month ago at our local .NET UserGroup, and the other guys suggested that I should repeat that at the nrw07. Unfortunately...
  • BlogML Official Website Reloaded

Earlier this month, I announced the availability of BlogML official website powered by DotNetNuke ASP.NET portal. I also stated that neither me nor Darren liked to use DotNetNuke for several reasons but there wasn't a better solution for us at that time. After that announcement, some Telligenti's began some conversations and moved them to me about the support for Wiki and Knowledge Base applications in Community Server. The result of these conversations was a big favor of Telligent, especially...
  • Community Server Developer Conference - My Plans

If anyone from the UK is going to the CSDC, here's my travel plans, just to see if anyone is on the same flight as me. I know Richard Mercer is on the return, but wondering about the outward bound leg. Outward bound leg: Flight number: BA2193 From: Gatwick (London) Terminal N To: Dallas Fort Worth (Dallas) Depart: 19 Oct 2007 10:35 BST Arrive: 19 Oct 2007 14:30 GMT -6 Class: World Traveller Plus Operated by: British Airways Return Leg: Flight number: BA2192 From: Dallas Fort Worth (Dallas) Terminal...
  • Community Server Byte for August 30, 2007

blog bits I'd love to listen to this non-technical presentation from Rob Howard on blogging, ROI and related social networking topics, but in WMV format alone it will be difficult for me to do the 42 minutes in a computer window while trying to bang out code. If, unlike me, you can do both words and development at the same time, definitely check out the video. New Tellicast on the forthcoming Graffiti CMS. (Love the new Tellicast opening, btw.) Yes, there's an accompanying .WAV, but you won't...
  • Graffiti CMS

Telligent through the latest Tellicast revealed a new product - Graffiti. Graffiti is being geared at small to medium sized business who just simply want to get some content up - whether it be a blog or a whole website. Watch the latest Tellicast for hot details! Also Ken Roberson posted that the new Community Server Developers Conference is based on Graffiti CMS - the footer of the site says "implemented in Graffiti CMS".

  • My New Pocket PC: HTC P4350

Over the past 3.5 years, I've been using a Qtek 2020 Pocket PC to manage my business life! That PPCPE had Windows Mobile 2003 installed by default but I upgraded its ROM image to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. I was a member of first groups of the wave of people who bought Windows Mobile devices here (Symbian is the most popular OS locally!). For almost two years, it was an excellent device for me but after new releases of Windows Mobile and breaking some parts of its LCD, I didn't attend...
  • New Blog Title Mouseover Popups at dbvt.com

I haven't done anything on my website for fun since I upgraded to CS2007 and was overdue on adding a new feature. I've been using a titles-only display for recent blog posts since CS 2.1 because I think its the most efficient way to navigate and select posts, particularly since I blog a lot. I knew one thing would make it better, mouseover title popups to display the post category and excerpt. I get my news from Yahoo, and one of the functions I use all the time is the news item mouseover...

  • Community Server 2007 Service Pack 3 Pre-Release

Jose Lema announces Community Server 2007 Service Pack 3 Beta release on Community Server site. This Beta release has 3.0.20827.1108 as its build number. There is a huge list of enhancements and bug fixes available in the download packages and on the announcement post. A few days ago I installed an earlier pre-release package on my site (build 3.0.20823.1100). There were a few issues for me that I reported back to the team and they're fixed in this build. In my opinion this is a major service...
  • Synonyms in SQL Server 2005

Naming conventions are always a big concern for developers whether they're an application developer or database developers! Naming tables, columns, views, stored procedures and other objects in a database sometimes gets harder than what we think, especially when we're working on multiple objects with same name from two different databases, tables or ... SQL Server 2005 introduced a new feature for synonyms that come handy to assign alternative names for a database object in order to work...
