  • Community Server Byte for June 30, 2007

blog bits Two Craigslist posts for you in today's Blog Bits. First a "we're looking for a C# developer" post, though I don't know if "location:DUMBO" is physical or virtual. The second Craigslist post for you today is seeking for an expert Community Server developer. Whoa! I LIKE these guys. "NO, we DO NOT have the time to wait for you to learn it, or get better at it." And, "NO BULL CRAP, please provide credentials and proof of experience." forum...
  • exchange 2007 restored

My Exchange 2007 server has been restored, and is now back to being the primary email server for the nb dev domain. When ever this email server is down, the Windows Live Custom Domains Email server will take over. Or I hope it will. So just to clarify, nb development has 2 email servers now Read More...
  • Google Safe Browsing API

Google provides a very good service for web surfing and blocking phishing and malware pages. The service is named Google Safe Browsing API which is actually a web API for developers to download a blacklist of suspected pages and check their own URL to see if they're included in the list. From the Google Safe Browsing API site: The Safe Browsing API is an experimental API that enables client applications to check URLs against Google's constantly updated blacklists of suspected phishing and...

  • Three Things About Software I Didn't Learn In College

Scott Hanselman recently put out an interesting request for folks to post about three things they've learned about software either in college, out of college, or both. Seeing as I only took one programming class in college (C++ 101), this post will cater to his request of "I'm especially interesting in those who didn't go to college at all, to add yours" (I do have some college, but only 3 semesters worth). Reading Karthik's response is what inspired me to hammer out my...
  • Community Server Stuff and Community Server Extras Have Been Merged

A few days ago Robert McLaws gave me a good suggestion to merge our Community Server Extras project (that I had announced a short while ago) with his Community Server Stuff project on CodePlex. Since we hadn't done anything on our project and I thought merging these two projects can result a better and more active project, agreed with him and moved our project to his workspace. So after this, there is no Community Server Extras project and it's a part of Community Server Stuff (does that...
  • Exchange 2007 SP1 Beta 1+ Windows Server 2008 Beta 3

OMFG, trying to get Exchange 2007 SP1 Beta 1 Working on Windows Server 2008 is a fracking nightmare. Firstly, you can install the hub transport role, and the mailbox role, but try to install the client access role, nope, it doesn't like IIS8, lol, nice of the exchange team not to make that work. So what am I to do? Well I'll tell ya, WMWare. Hopefully it'll work in x64 mode this time, if it doesn't then I'll try again to install the client access role on the server. This should...
  • Update: Windows Vista x64 & 4GB RAM Issue Resolved

After much playing around today, I'm finally running fine with all 4GB of RAM. The fix was a beta BIOS update which seems to have fixed my problems. Read More...
  • Windows Vista x64 & Me: Day 1

Yesterday was a long day installing all the components into my new computer, which took a good couple of hours (I had to make sure I did it properly). Once that was done, I excitedly turned it on, and after spending a minute or two in the BIOS changing some settings, it just powered itself off! I can tell you, the feeling you get in your stomach when that happens isn't nice. So after playing around a little, checking cable connections etc. I turned it on again and took a look at the hardware...

  • Nayyeri.NET Turns Two

Today is the second birthday of my site while it has changed a lot from the early days. During these two years, I tried to share my knowledge with others via my blog and get community feedbacks on them. Since the last year, my site experienced major changes in content and I moved from some simple short posts to descriptive posts that can be considered as articles as well. This could bring more traffic to my site and improve its rank on community. Speaking of traffic, I never could stay on a server...

  • Local Animations in Windows Presentation Foundation

You already know that it's possible to create animations in WPF via XAML markup or programming codes. It's harder to do this via programming codes though but it has some benefits that let you to customize these animations on fly and dynamically change the properties to get more flexibility. But there is one more benefit when using programming codes: you can write local animations to save your time. Local animations are a type of animations that don't need storyboards and apply directly...

  • Windows Vista x64 & TrustedInstaller.exe Pegging my Processor!

After installing all the bits into my new computer , I found that Windows Vista x64 was unusable. After looking at what processes were running, a process called TrustedInstaller.exe was eating up 99% of the processor time and slowing the whole thing down. After doing some digging around, it seems the problem is caused by a combination of the Core 2 Quad processor (I have the Q6600 2.4GHz), Windows Vista x64 and the fact I was running 4GB RAM. I haven't managed to find a fix for it, but I have...

  • Sorting Blog Posts by Relevance in Community Server 2007

Did you know that you can list the blog posts on your Community Server 2007 sites aggregate page by relevance? If you take a look in the Control Panel at Administration->Blogs->Post Relevance Sorting you will see some settings to enable you to just that. The default behavior of the aggregate blog page is to display a list of recent post ordered chronologically. By enabling the Post Relevance Sorting option posts made to the aggregate blog page will be ordered using the factors below. This allows...
  • Twitter: Dead already?

If you haven't heard of Twitter (where have you been?) it a kind of Micro-blogging that makes it quick and simple to update the world (or at least those who care) about what you're up to. In only 140 characters, you can quickly post what you're doing, where you are and where you're going. The appeal for me and indeed many people that I work with, is that working at home, and in a different country, it enables me to easily keep up with the goings on of friends and colleagues. I am...
  • Community Server 2007 Sub Forms

Earlier this week I was spending most of my time converting the Microsoft Dynamics Live Community site from Community Server 2.1 to Community Server 2007 . One of the things that had been done on the original site was to extend the user sign up process to capture a bunch of metadata as well as the usual stuff (email address, timezone etc). With Community Server 2007 this is easier than ever to do. Over at Ben Tiedt's site you'll find a great article on how you can do this. It contains code...
