  • Availabot

After coming back to home (where he was?!), today Hamed had linked to a nice physical bot to represent the status of contacts in Instant Messengers. It has been named Availabot . In a nutshell: Availabot is a physical representation of presence in Instant Messenger applications. Availabot plugs into your computer by USB , stands to attention when your chat buddy comes online, and falls down when they go away. It’s a presence-aware, peripheral-vision USB toy… and because the puppets are made in small...
  • Mogadishu

My brother Xan Rice is a journalist who works as the Africa correspondent for the Guardian. He is based in Nairobi, Kenya, but spends most of his time in the various hot spots of Africa – Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Somalia. He was in Mogadishu last week and was present when a gunman assassinated a Swedish cameraman called Martin Adler. His personal account of the shooting makes for some chilling reading: Some people freeze, most run. I run. Away from the sound - a sharp,...

  • CS2: Screencast: Creating polls

Today a topic that most of you already might know how to do. How to create a poll in Community Server 2.0. But still, evey now and then the question pops up in the forums. So I thought I'll do a post on it. Another reason for doing this post, was to examine if I could post screencasts here at weblogs.asp.net in anyway, and also play around with making screencasts in my newly bought SnagIt application (will probably blog about SnagIt in a upcoming post, since it a great tool for screenshots and much...

  • CS Dev Guide: Post Attachments

Well, so far I talked about all important aspects of Weblog APIs in Community Server (except new tagging feature in Community Server 2.1 which I’ll talk about it after release date because it can have some changes). As post attachments are an important part of most of Community Server applications such as Weblog, Forum, File Gallery and Photo Gallery, I want to talk about them in this post before going to complete my discussion about Weblog. Blog post attachments, forum thread attachments, file gallery...

Read More...
  • CS2: Download reports for your File Gallery

I believe that the File Galleries that came as a feature built-in in CS 2.0 was a great feature. Now I can offer download area for my users a little bit like download.com. I can also see how many users have downloaded the files, and how many has read it's description. Users can also comment on the file entry as they can for a blog post. But as with many things currently in CS there's more "under the hood". The feature I am talking about I haven't found in any docs, and I haven't stumbled on it until...
  • Nayyeri.NET first anniversary

One year is gone … About one year ago, I started this website when I had different aims. I started with Community Server 1.1 when it had some issues for me on shared environment. My hoster and I spent much time to set this website up and finally we could do it. I started blogging with a few visitors who were probably only my friends. Day after day, I could improve this website to arrive to this point. At first days, never I could predict this future. Before that, I had several blogs in Persian but...
  • CSMVPS.com (Beta) Site Launched

Rich Mercer (a Community Server MVP) was kind enough to register and donate CSMVPS.com to the CS MVP group, so sure enough we’re getting a site set up where you can “get to know” your CS MVPs. It’s still very much in the inception phase, but for now we’ve at least got all of the MVP blogs mirrored for easy one stop shopping to catch up on what we’ve been writing about. It’s worth mentioning that this will not be a strictly CS related site, rather a place...
  • Round And Round We Go

So I’m finally starting to get packed up for what is shaping up to be the biggest move I’ve ever made: I’m leaving uptown Charlotte and heading back out to the neighborhood I grew up in (which is also the same neighborhood where my first "real" apartment was located...things have a funny way of coming full circle, it was 2 blocks from that house). Uptown has been amazing...I moved just over 5 years ago when there was virtually nothing downtown aside from a few clubs and restaurants. Charlotte is...
  • Introducing to CodePlex

Finally Microsoft announced CodePlex. CodePlex is a new collaborative development portal which can host shared code projects and give them many great features such as Forums, Issue Tracker, Source Code manager and … CodePlex is completely integrated with Team Foundation Server. Developers can use Team Explorer to contribute in their projects. As Darren said here , also you can use a free client named Turtle (it’s hosted on CodePlex itself) to deal with Team Foundation Server from other platforms...

  • Dev Log Date 27.06.06 - How to add a site showcase to your site

While configuring the Community Server MVP's homepage, I decided to copy the Community Server 's site showcase javascript, and tweak it, and well it's been a voyage of discovery. In this dev log, I'll show you how you can have a siteshowcase on your Community Server site soon. This code will use the a Gallery to store the images, and make Community Server resize the images, quite clear that . I'll also show you how this code pull the images from the db, using CS query's, which means that it updates...
  • The Slow Deliberate March

Time seems to move a lot faster these days. I don’t know if it’s the amount of chaos going on in my life these days, or if it’s the run-up to summer (oh wait, you mean it’s here already!). But the fact is, the last few months have flown by for me, and I hardly had time to sleep, much less stop to think clearly enough to write a coherent post. Speaking of sleep, wouldn’t it be much better if it weren’t necessary? I could gain an extra 6 hours a day to accomplish the things I want to do. (Yes, I’ve...
