  • CommunityServer Articles - A best kept secret!

Articles allows you to create new pages with the look and feel of your CommunityServer site and your skin or theme. It gives you the use of the same built in content editor that the Content Part control uses so you can paste in html or JavaScript or just use plain text if you like. To create an article just go to Control Panel->Administration->System Tools->Manage/Create Articles. Share this post: Email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! Read More...
  • CS Tip 42: The Miser's CS Development Toolkit

For this tip I thought I would share a few of the tools and services that I use for skinning and modding Community Server , and for web development in general. Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition (Free) I haven’t gotten around to upgrading to Visual Studio 2005 yet, and I don’t do pirated software, so this free version has become my primary development tool. I am embarrassed to admit that I used to use Dreamweaver a lot to code websites. Since I started using VWD2005EE I haven’t...
  • CS Tip 41: Change your CS Jobs settings

Rick Rezler from ASPNIX first alerted me to this issue , and I subsequently remembered that Jayson Knight had blogged about it as part of his CS tidbits , but it is important enough to repeat here as a tip: By default all CS jobs are set to run every minute. This is a mistake, and this default should be 15 minutes. This can really affect server performance, especially with large CS sites or servers that are running multiple CS installations (such as shared hosting for instance). To fix this change...
  • Adding new users using the API

A question that came up this week on the forums was “how can I check to see if a user exists before creating it when using the Community Server API’s?” There are no tricks here, and it’s quite simple, but many examples I have seen do not make it clear how to do this. Simply put, the Users.Create() method returns an enum called CreateUserStatus which tells you all you need to know. There is no need to check to existence of a username or even an email address. You are safer leaving this to the framework...
  • ExtendedAttributes in Community Server

In this, the first of what I hope is a long line of articles based on customizing Community Server , I want to talk about a little know but very powerful property found in many places inside the CS API. One thing people often need to do in Community Server , especially when customizing it, is to save custom data. Of course, if you’re feeling brave, you can always edit the database schema and related Data Providers as well as extending the relevant class (Weblog, Gallery, User etc.). Now this method...

Read More...
  • Community Server 2.1

Read More...
  • Dev Log Date 25.05.06 - Community Server Listings Build 0.8

Another slightly late post here, this time it's for the next increment in the listings page, build 0.8. This build has ' SEARCHING!! ', yay!! Albeit very limited searching, but I will improve on this in 1.x builds. As you can see the listings is approching build 1.0, which will be when I make it offical, and finish adding the rest of the sites in. Things to come in the 0.9 build: The ability to UPDATE your listed site All of the old wiki sites entered Things to come in the 1.x builds: Enter the url...
  • Migration from Evolution

Hey folks, this is my first post direct to my website from inside Microsoft Word 2007, just thought I’d see how it was, and wat it was like. O and to bring you news that my migration off evolutiondsl will take place next week, Thursday next week to be precise. Which is good news. I got the confirmation email through off Eclipse just a few of minutes ago, lol, I know it’s nearly 5am in the UK, but I was up watching Big Brother. It reads: Dear Mr Brown Congratulations! Your ADSL service MIGRATION date...
  • Weblogs.aspnet.net upgraded

I’m a bit late to blog about this (ok, very late) but last week, weblogs.asp.net was upgraded to an early build of Community Server 2.1. It looks very cool and I love the new blog skin! With each version, CS really takes my breath away! It really shows the quality of CS when it can be deployed to sites with this kind of volume before release! A great job has been done by all on the team. Way to go guys! Read More...
  • Multiple Categories using Word 2007

As Keyvan pointed out on a comment , one thing that is missing from the category support between Community Server and Word 2007 is the ability to assign multiple categories. That only poses a small issue for me as I only have three categories anyway, of which I can get by using one, but I can see that for some people, it won’t do the job. Oh well, one step closer! • CS Tip 40: Changing the date format in your blog skin

It is really easy to change the default date format in your blog skin. Open up your skin.config file and change the dateFormat = "f" parameter to the format that you want. For example: <Skin dateFormat = "dd MMMM yyyy"/> will give you "24 May 2006". <Skin dateFormat = "dd-MM-yyyy hh:mm"/> will give you "24-05-2006 16:22". Read More...

  • Moving Back to Eclipse

Well after a terrible month for the ADSL internet connection at home, and due to the email from evolution, I'm finally migrating back to eclipse internet. It's taken nearly 3 weeks to sort out everything with eclipse, but today, finally, my adsl status with them was cleared, and that meant that I could finally migrate back to them. I've set a date for the 1st of June (Next Thursday) for the migration to take affect, this is 5 days before evolutiondsl stops! But on 1st June my migration code gets...

  • Feeddemon rocks

I have been playing around with a few RSS Readers in the last month. I was using the Sage feed reader plugin for Firefox which worked well for me for a long time, but my blogroll was getting too unwieldy and I needed a more robust solution. I downloaded and installed Sharpreader , RSSBandit and Feeddemon , and tested them extensively over the last 30 days. Yesterday I paid $29 for the fully licensed version of Feeddemon and made it my official feed reader choice. Sharpreader and RSSBandit are both...
